Providing studios

For Artists

Owned by Artists

For more than a decade, ARTLAND has provided subsidised studio space for contemporary artists, offering rents below market rates to support sustainable creative practices in an increasingly expensive property environment.

We believe secure, affordable workspace is fundamental to a thriving visual arts community. As property and living costs rise, the cost of a studio can become a significant barrier to making work and sustaining an artistic practice.

Our aim is simple: to keep artists working. By prioritising access over commercial returns, we provide professional working environments at rents significantly below market rates, helping artists sustain their practices and continue contributing to Sydney’s cultural life.

About Us

Established by Louis Pratt in 2011, ARTLAND began as a ‘meanwhile’ use at the Summer Hill Flour Mill prior to redevelopment, providing 2,400m² of affordable studio space across two buildings for 26 artists. In 2014, Andrew Southwood-Jones and Guido Maestri joined Louis to acquire the first site for permanent creative use. A second location followed in 2020.

For more than a decade, our founders have contributed their time and resources in kind to help keep rents affordable. In 2026, new funding enabled us to rebrand as ARTLAND and prepare for our next phase of growth.

Our ambition extends beyond affordable studios. We aim to give artists the opportunity to own the spaces in which they work, building long-term security and protecting creative spaces for future generations. Through collective ownership, artists will have opportunities to invest in the properties they occupy.

ARTLAND also advocates for creative space operators and the broader visual arts sector, contributing to government discussions and policy development. We believe that secure, affordable places to work are fundamental to a thriving arts ecosystem, sustaining not only individual artists but the wider creative community.
